What is Black Pepper?

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is one of the most popular and widely used spices in the world. It comes from the dried fruit of a vine in the pepper family, known for its bold flavor and warm aroma.

The fruit, called a peppercorn, is small—about 5 mm in size—and contains a single seed. Depending on how it's processed, it can become:

• Black Pepper – made by cooking and drying unripe peppercorns

• Green Pepper – made from unripe peppercorns that are dried or preserved

• White Pepper – made from fully ripe peppercorns with the outer skin removed
