Talbina: A Healing Food from the Sunnah
Talbina is a simple porridge made from barley flour, mixed with milk and honey. Its name comes from the Arabic word "laban" (milk), because it looks white and soft like milk.
In Islam, talbina is considered part of prophetic medicine—natural remedies recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He praised its ability to comfort and heal.
One hadith (saying of the Prophet ﷺ) tells us:
A’isha (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said:
"When someone in her family passed away, and women came to offer condolences, she would prepare talbina in a small pot. After cooking it, she would pour it over tharid (a dish made of meat and bread). Then she would say: ‘Eat it, because I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: Talbina comforts a sad heart and reduces sorrow.’”
